Suffering

I've been really mulling over what I heard the other night at the downtown church. It's the idea that suffering is almost always self-induced. That really struck me. Oh sure, I've always understood that Jesus went to the cross voluntarily..he gave his life in death. That much was obvious. But the fact that the 12 disciples chose the path of suffering. That everyday we are choosing to suffer, whether it be for our career, our dreams, family, popularity, money...whatever it may be. We make that choice. I know that so often I have avoided suffering for the sake of Christ. Lets face it, I often try to avoid it like the plague. So what am I suffering for...really? That's the question I've been asking myself and will be evaluating in my life in the next few weeks.

Hi...found your blog through ravelry.
This post made me pause and think about suffering and the fact it can have duality of meaning.

As Christians we can choose to suffer to live surrendering to God. But what about those who have no choice in their sufferings? Those so effected by others choices, who force them into suffering? We often tell them that Christ came to bring freedom from oppression and suffering. Does this not apply to us as well?
